The Healthcare Industry Trends
Due to this trend, some of the healthiest employees are dropping out of the group plan, leaving a higher concentration of unhealthy employees on the plan. Additionally, employees are enrolling themselves in the company-offered group plans and purchasing individual policies for their dependents. When this happens to a company, their group rates typically go up; in result to the increased experience of providing care for the less-healthy employee pool. According to Tod Zacharias, President of HumanaOne, "18 million Americans are covered by individual policies today, a number that will grow by 5% to 8% a year for the foreseeable future. By 2010, there might be 22 million to 24 million people covered individually." Healthy employees have options, often leading them to alternative individual health plans. As the public becomes more educated about individual options, they realize that healthy people can purchase health insurance for themselves or for their families, often at a lower cost than what their company offers.
